Down Goes Dam! (The Gorge Dam)

Supporting the Gorge Metroparks Dam Removal

 By: James O'Flanagan MS, FRSA

We're excited to share an update on the ongoing work at the Gorge Metroparks Dam! 🌿🌊

While the dam’s removal isn’t currently planned, we’re closely monitoring and documenting the process. The dam has disrupted the river's flow and impacted local wildlife habitats πŸ¦‹πŸ¦.

In 2024, our focus is on tracking the changes, assessing the impact, and sharing the journey with you. Oapsie, East Rim Trail, and I are committed to raising awareness and supporting efforts to restore the river’s ecosystem πŸŒŽπŸ’§.

Through the Galaxy of Edi YouTube channel, I’m sharing updates on the dam’s impact and how the community can get involved in conservation efforts πŸ› οΈπŸŽ₯.

We’re also hosting clean-up events and educational initiatives to engage the public and protect our local ecosystems πŸ’ͺ🌱. Though the dam removal isn’t happening yet, we’ll continue documenting its effects and working to build a stronger, more informed community around the Gorge Metroparks 🌳.

Join us in this important journeyβ€”let's preserve the river for future generations! πŸŒŠπŸ’«

About the USGS-BGN Naming Project

Introducing the USGS-BGN Stream Naming Project

We are thrilled to announce the launch of the USGS-BGN Stream Naming Project on the East Rim Trail website! This exciting initiative, in collaboration with the United States Geological Survey (USGS) and the Board on Geographic Names (BGN), invites our community to participate in naming the unnamed streams in our region.

The project aims to celebrate the natural beauty and historical significance of our local waterways. By giving these streams meaningful names, we can enhance our environmental stewardship and strengthen our connection to the landscape.

We encourage everyone to get involved by suggesting names and participating in our upcoming events. This is a unique opportunity to make a lasting impact on our community and preserve the heritage of our natural surroundings.

Join us in this important endeavor to honor and protect our streams. Stay tuned for more details and event announcements on our website. Together, we can make a difference!

The 2024 Ohio Solar Eclipse: Capturing Totality from the Bac

A Once-in-a-Lifetime Eclipse, Captured from the Backyard in Stunning Detail πŸŒ‘

On April 8, 2024, Ohio witnessed one of the most breathtaking celestial events of a lifetimeβ€”a total solar eclipse. As the moon completely obscured the sun, day turned to twilight, temperatures dropped, and the world stood still for a brief, awe-inspiring moment. And right from the backyard, we captured every second of it. πŸ“½οΈπŸŒŒ

Bringing the Eclipse to Life: Camera 1 & Camera 2 πŸŽ₯🌞

To document this incredible event, we set up two cameras, each offering a unique perspective on the eclipse.

πŸ” Camera 1: Close-Up of Totality

Captured in stunning detail, this footage zooms in on the moon’s slow dance across the sun, revealing the mesmerizing solar corona. Set to the timeless "Stairway to Heaven" by Led Zeppelin, this video captures the eclipse’s grandeur and cosmic significance. πŸŽΆπŸŒ‘

⏩ Camera 2: High-Speed Eclipse in 60 Seconds

From a wide backyard perspective, Camera 2 speeds up the entire eclipse into a 60-second time-lapse, showing the dramatic transition from daylight to total darkness and back again. With CCR’s "Bad Moon Rising" as the soundtrack, this video brings an electrifying energy to an already surreal event. πŸš€πŸŽΈ

Why This Eclipse Was Special for Ohio πŸŒŽπŸ”

Ohio was in the path of totality, meaning we got to see the full eclipse experienceβ€”a phenomenon that won’t happen here again for decades. The sky dimmed, the birds quieted, and for a few brief minutes, the sun became a glowing ring of fire. This was a once-in-a-lifetime moment, and documenting it from the backyard allowed us to share it with those who couldn't experience it firsthand.

Relive the Eclipse with Us! 🎬

Couldn’t witness totality in person? No worries! You can experience the magic through our two exclusive eclipse videos, each capturing a different perspective of this celestial wonder.

Conservation Rocks!

Deck 36, Issue No. 19: Conservation & Oapsie Inc.'s USGS-BGN

Discover the Beauty of the Outdoors with East Rim Trail

By: James O'Flanagan & Edi Oapsie

At Oapsie Inc., conservation is more than a goalβ€”it’s a responsibility. Our latest initiative focuses on officially naming four key natural landmarks within Cuyahoga Valley, Ohio, a project that strengthens our environmental commitment and deepens the community’s connection to our shared natural heritage. This effort, aligned with the United States Geological Survey - Board on Geographic Names (USGS-BGN), is a milestone in environmental preservation and local history.

The Power of Naming: A Conservation Tool 🏞️

Naming natural landmarks is more than a formalityβ€”it’s a powerful conservation strategy. By officially recognizing these locations, we ensure greater public awareness, preservation efforts, and a stronger sense of place within our region. The first four locations in our naming applications include:

βœ”οΈ Yesberger Memorial Pond – Honoring the Yesberger family’s legacy in conservation.
βœ”οΈ The Peninsula Quarry – A historical site transformed into a natural retreat.
βœ”οΈ Sylvan Run – A vital waterway contributing to the region’s biodiversity.
βœ”οΈ Deep Lock Quarry – A picturesque pond serving as the starting point of Sylvan Run.

This initiative highlights how engineering, environmental stewardship, and community engagement can come together to protect and celebrate the places that shape our local landscape. πŸŒΏπŸ”

Acknowledging Leadership & Collaboration 🀝

This project would not be possible without Jennifer Runyon, whose expertise has been instrumental in navigating the complexities of the USGS-BGN naming process. Her detailed feedback has helped refine our approach, and her dedication to preserving historical and natural sites inspires our continued efforts. Her collaboration is a crucial piece of this conservation puzzle. πŸ†πŸ’‘

Preserving Nature Through Technology & Innovation πŸ’»πŸŒ²

Oapsie Inc. is pioneering the intersection of engineering and conservation, integrating Pennantview Biophysics Software Suite and other AI-driven tools to study, document, and protect natural environments. πŸŒŽπŸ”¬ Our work on Peninsula Parkβ€”which focuses on road erosion control and wetland conservationβ€”demonstrates how technology can enhance sustainability efforts while reducing costs.

We believe in a future where technology and nature coexist seamlessly, ensuring that conservation is not just a priority but a long-term, scalable solution.
