Conservation Activities In & Around East Rim Trail

On April 8, 2024, Ohio witnessed one of the most breathtaking celestial events of a lifetime—a total solar eclipse. As the moon completely obscured the sun, day turned to twilight, temperatures dropped, and the world stood still for a brief, awe-inspiring moment. And right from the backyard, we captured every second of it. 📽️🌌

To document this incredible event, we set up two cameras, each offering a unique perspective on the eclipse.

Captured in stunning detail, this footage zooms in on the moon’s slow dance across the sun, revealing the mesmerizing solar corona. Set to the timeless "Stairway to Heaven" by Led Zeppelin, this video captures the eclipse’s grandeur and cosmic significance. 🎶🌑

⏩ Camera 2: High-Speed Eclipse in 60 Seconds

From a wide backyard perspective, Camera 2 speeds up the entire eclipse into a 60-second time-lapse, showing the dramatic transition from daylight to total darkness and back again. With CCR’s "Bad Moon Rising" as the soundtrack, this video brings an electrifying energy to an already surreal event. 🚀🎸

Ohio was in the path of totality, meaning we got to see the full eclipse experience—a phenomenon that won’t happen here again for decades. The sky dimmed, the birds quieted, and for a few brief minutes, the sun became a glowing ring of fire. This was a once-in-a-lifetime moment, and documenting it from the backyard allowed us to share it with those who couldn't experience it firsthand.

Naming natural landmarks is more than a formality—it’s a powerful conservation strategy. By officially recognizing these locations, we ensure greater public awareness, preservation efforts, and a stronger sense of place within our region. The first four locations in our naming applications include:

✔️ Yesberger Memorial Pond – Honoring the Yesberger family’s legacy in conservation.
✔️ The Peninsula Quarry – A historical site transformed into a natural retreat.
✔️ Sylvan Run – A vital waterway contributing to the region’s biodiversity.
✔️ Deep Lock Quarry – A picturesque pond serving as the starting point of Sylvan Run.

This initiative highlights how engineering, environmental stewardship, and community engagement can come together to protect and celebrate the places that shape our local landscape. 🌿🔍
